Sylvanus - Enter the Legend

It's coming back, after 20 years.

We are reasonably confident that, after a couple of years of intensive work, the game is now as functional as it was in 2005 when things went off the rails a bit. We are now focusing on player-visible game improvements, as well as coder-visible infrastructure improvements. Expect to see lots more bugs soon.

Update 01/11/25: October was less busy than September, although several major pieces of work were completed. Of especial note is the fact that Sylvanus now understands GMCP: the full Core package is implemented, and a large chunk of the Room package (enough for mapping to work on Mudlet). Some minore tweaks have been applied to quests to improve consistency. Some elderly bugs got squashed. Additionally, there has been a major refactoring of some parts of the codebase to make it easier to add new functionality and bugfixes. In acknowledgment of the player-visible changes, the version has been bumped to 0.6.2.

Update 04/10/25: September was a busy month, with several major bugs being fixed (including some long-standing ones) and some gentle tweaking of the user experience. Props to Ikari for his indefatigable testing, and because of whose thoughtful observations, the quest subsystem is now being quietly reworked and improved. One day, we shall forgive him. Of particular note in release 0.6.1 is the fact that Sylvanus is listening for IPv6 connections! It will be interesting to see how many IPv6 connections we actually get. Backend security has also been improved with a new password management subsystem. Looking forward to the next couple of months, we should see improved consistency across the quests, and also some initial forays into the wild world of GMCP.

Update 29/08/25: We have completed the removal of the scaffolding code which was put in place to facilitate the port to C, and conducted extensive testing of over 1300 verbs. We have made many bugfixes (and undoubtedly introduced new bugs to replace them). The new code is now live on this server (version 0.6.0, if you're interested), and with the help of a couple of intrepid testers we are fixing a handful of bugs which escaped the earlier testing phase. You are welcome to log in and look around, but remember that this is alpha-quality code: the Management accept no responsibility for any disturbances in the fabric of reality thereby caused.

Oh, we also found the old website! Bits of that will be coming back, too.

Visit us on this server: sylvanus.net:4343 (IPv4 and IPv6!).

We recommend Mudlet (and we will eventually be developing packages specifically to support Mudlet), but any telnet client will work, with the exception of Windows Telnet, which is so broken as to be unusable.

No GMCP yet, but it is planned for.
